The service area covers approximately 85 square miles with the resident population approaching 80,000, and an estimated 27,000 students attending Grossmont and Cuyamaca Colleges. The Lakeside Sheriff's Substation was opened in May 2015 to better serve the unincorporated community of Lakeside, portions of unincorporated El Cajon, the Barona Indian Reservation, and both campuses of the Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District. The unincorporated community of Lakeside became a town site in 1886, and for decades received law enforcement services based out of the Santee Sheriff's Station.
